In a groundbreaking move, the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) is embarking on an extensive five-year study to tackle the alarming issue of workplace violence faced by emergency nurses. This initiative responds to a pressing global crisis that has long plagued healthcare settings, particularly emergency departments.
Despite numerous small-scale studies shedding light on the issue, there has yet to be a comprehensive, long-term analysis that tracks workplace violence trends over time. The ENA’s new survey will delve into the incidence and prevalence of violence experienced by emergency nurses, examining the various forms it takes, the factors that contribute to it, and the support available to those affected. By analyzing the interplay of organizational, environmental, and human factors, researchers aim to develop effective strategies to combat this critical issue.
“ENA has been wanting to do a more in-depth study on workplace violence for years, and I’m thrilled to see it put into action,” says ENA President Chris Dellinger, MBA, BSN, RN, FAEN. The last time ENA researchers conducted a large-scale survey was in 2010; the report was published in 2011.
“Hopefully, a survey like this can increase awareness among hospital leadership, identify innovative strategies to mitigate workplace violence, and potentially inform the need for legislation,” Dellinger says.
The survey will span five years, and participants will be asked to complete it annually. Each survey will take approximately 25 minutes, and new respondents can join each year regardless of past participation. Data will be analyzed annually, ensuring participant anonymity throughout the process.
To qualify, participants must be emergency department nurses engaged in direct patient care for at least 50% of their work time, be over 21 years old, and speak English. Notably, participation is not limited to those in the United States.
Interested individuals can participate in this vital research by completing the enrollment form here. The 2024 survey will be open until October 11.
